The state of Michigan has been in lockdown mode on and off for months, in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19 across the state.
Last week, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) decided to extend the current lockdown until at least Sunday, Dec. 20, according to Michigan Capitol Confidential. It is expected that the lockdown could be extended once again, as Michigan is one of the states in the country with the fastest-growing number of coronavirus cases.
The epidemic order means that bars and restaurants in the state cannot open to provide indoor services, a restriction that has drawn the criticism of many. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recently said, “Hope is on the horizon, but we need an additional 12 days to determine the full impact of the Thanksgiving holiday on our efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus," according to Michigan Capitol Confidential.
Republican lawmakers are growing increasingly impatient and are actively fighting back against the lockdowns, which they feel are unconstitutional.
